Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine teacher Majella Murphy took 42 pupils from the school to the Kerry Colleges Cross Country Championships on January 21st 2011 and there began a journey the club could only have dreamed of a couple of years ago, with the school taking home 13 medals on the day.
First up were the minor girls running 1500m which saw Laura Hallissey come an easy 1st followed by Clodagh Quinlan in 3rd, Chloe Hawker in 7th which along with team mate Alice O’Reilly was enough to give the team gold medals.
The senior girls 3000m was won by Rachel Hawker, her first outing since joining the club at the end of 2010.
The intermediate boys also ran well to take the bronze team medal.
In the senior boys 5000m Adrian Spillane was 4th and Colm O’Sullivan was 5th.
The minor girls team and Rachel then went on to the South Munster Colleges Cross Country where Laura Hallissey was 2nd and the team took gold and Rachel won the senior girls.
Munster followed with Rachel coming a close second and the minor girls team taking 3rd place and all of a sudden we had All-Ireland qualifiers and a huge team of parents and supporters headed to Santry in Dublin on Saturday the 12th March. All girls ran well on the day with Rachel taking 4th place to win her first All-Ireland medal.
